Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient healing art with modern evidence to back it up. Acupuncture has been performed on millions of patients throughout the world and is more than 2,500 years old. Through acupuncture, conditions such as headaches, tiredness, pain, digestive problems, and arthritis can be treated successfully.
A typical acupuncture treatment involves the placement of 2-20 needles. Many people who have never experienced acupuncture are, at first, hesitant to have this kind of treatment. However, acupuncture needles are very thin and many patients do not feel anything more than a slight amount of pressure when the needle is inserted.

Depending on the condition that is being treated the needles may stay in for anywhere from 10 minutes to 45 minutes. In addition, the needles may be attached to an electrical stimulation unit so that the sore or injured area can be treated more effectively.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a natural health care discipline. Chiropractors use a drug-free, hands-on approach to assess and treat disorders of the spine, nervous system, muscles, and joints. Chiropractors require a minimum of 7 years of post-secondary education to become qualified in the profession.
A typical visit to a chiropractor begins with the chiropractor asking the patient various questions to help them understand the cause of the patient's pain or discomfort. Following that the chiropractor will do a physical exam of the area of complaint. This will involve palpating (touching) and moving the affected area to see if the chiropractor can reproduce the pain and thereby discover the underlying problem. Corresponding areas of the spine will also be examined to see if there is a spinal or nerve component to the complaint. After the physical exam the chiropractor will provide the patient with a diagnosis of their condition and will present various options for treatment. After the patient and the chiropractor have agreed on a course of care the chiropractor will provide a treatment on that very first visit.
Chiropractic treatments include both passive (done by the chiropractor) and active (done by the patient) components. Examples of passive treatments include adjustments, mobilizations, muscle stretching, acupuncture, electric stimulation, Shockwave, and Kinesio Taping. An adjustment is when a chiropractor applies a fast and gentle force to a joint in your body which often results in a popping sound. This popping sound is normal and is an indication that some of the joint pressure has been released. After an adjustment patients usually feel an increase in their ability to move the adjusted joint and a decrease in pain. Examples of active treatments include exercise prescriptions, dietary advice, and activity/work modifications.
At Life 'n Balance we use current literature and the best available resources and techniques to help our patients. We encourage you to try chiropractic care for yourself. Through chiropractic care we will help you achieve balance in you life.

Massage

Massage is a method of treatment that involves applying pressure to the muscles and connective tissues of the body. Massage can relieve stress, promote healing, and increase feelings of well being. Treatments range from 30 – 90 minutes.
At Life 'n Balance we offer the following types of massage treatments:
Relaxation Massage: A soothing and gentle massage designed to fully relax and relieve stress on the body.
Therapeutic Massage: A deep tissue massage that penetrates into the muscle fibres, breaks up adhesions, scar tissue, and improves circulation. Great for acute and chronic pain, and injuries. Helps to improve range of motion.
Cupping Massage: A form of deep tissue massage where silicone cups are placed on the skin and a vacuum created (often leaving a characteristic bruise on the skin after treatment). Helps with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being.
Pre/Postnatal Massage: For all stages of pregnancy. Increases circulation to help reduce leg cramps and the pain from swollen ankles. Decreases tension due to postural changes associated with pregnancy.
Trigger Point Therapy: This is a focused deep tissue technique. Trigger points are areas of increased tenderness in muscles that may refer pain to other parts of the body. Sustained pressure is applied to trigger points to help reduce muscle pain and tightness.
Myofascial Release: A deep tissue technique focusing on the muscles. In myofascial release tension is applied to the targeted muscle while the therapist stretches the muscle. Helps to improve circulation, remove adhesions, and increase tissue hydration.
Reflexology: A treatment based on traditional Chinese medicine. The therapist manipulates the feet hands, ears, and head in order to treat various ailments in the body.
Nerve Entrapment Therapy: Tight muscles may compress on the adjacent nerves causing symptoms such as pain, numbness, and tingling. By relaxing the surrounding tissue and releasing the nerve, these symptoms may be reduced.
Naturopathy

Naturopathic medicine is a unique and comprehensive approach to optimizing health and treating illness. The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the body to heal itself by identifying and treating the root cause of a particular condition. It is based on the understanding that the human body is a complex mechanism held in a delicate balance through natural processes such as metabolism, optimal cellular function and efficient organ function. Symptoms of illness signal that our balance is disturbed. Each person has an innate healing power, and the role of the Naturopathic Doctor is to remove obstructions to this healing power and facilitate it through gentle, non-toxic therapies.
Naturopathic Doctors look at the patient as a whole, considering the physical, emotional and mental aspects of their health; and by doing this will consider the many different possible underlying causes.
The role of the Naturopathic Doctor is to educate, empower and motivate patients to take an active role in the their own health. Rather than focus on illness, in naturopathic medicine, the doctor and patient, embark on a journey of wellness together.
Naturopathic Medicine can treat conditions such as:
